Last weekend at ASP was cold but pleasantly windless, making strolling between shanties a relatively pain-free process. There was much to see and do both inside and out, including cribbage and croquet on the west side of Shantyville, gripping historical theater from the Imperial TransAntarctic Expedition Shanty, and the heroic return of ASP favorites the Brass Messengers on Sunday.
This weekend is just as busy, and the forecasts are comparatively mild (high of 31 degrees!) On Saturday at noon, regular attractions at the Black Box begin, and Andy Sturdevant will continue his interactive efforts to master the skills of the native Minnesotan. At the IAMER shanty at noon, you will have the chance to finally create the proverbial world's tiniest violin and play it collaboratively with your favorite scientists (interviewed by Seed Magazine this week!) Nearby in the Third Level at this time, the Belfry collective presents an art-making workshop with four local art luminaries. Pedal-powered old-timey fiddle music courtesy of Shawn Glidden is featured at the Ped Pex Power Pod at 3pm.
Super Bowl Sunday gives you Colleen Harriss' camera-enhanced dance performance "Remote Control" once again, and music from Tim Kaiser and Nathan Hanson at the Ped Pex and Black Box. The great International Novelty Gamelan will bring the sounds of Jakarta to Plymouth at the Black Box at 1pm. And of course, the BIcicle Race begins at 2pm both days for those of you whose competitive bloodlust can't be quenched by the Steelers-Cardinals match-up.
As always, the full calendar can be viewed at http://www.artshantyprojects.org/calendar
See you on the ice!
