Art Shanty Projects - on Medicine Lake, Plymouth, Minnesota
January 14 - February 19, 2006
Open daily with events on weekends and occasional weekdays The Soap Factory presents a five-week exhibition of architecture, performances, science, art, zombies, spear-fishing, videos, robots, pinhole cameras, sculpture, knitting, readings and karaoke. The Art Shanty Projects are part art gallery, part residency and part sculpture park, inspired by the tradition of ice fishing and ice fishing houses used in the Minnesota winter. Supported in part by the McKnight Foundation. For more information: www.artshantyprojects.org.
Hailed by the City Pages as one of the eleven things they're looking forward to this winter, the Art Shanty Projects on-ice art exhibition is soon to be underway. This winter, over 30 artists and artist teams are building a community of Art Shanties on Medicine Lake in Plymouth, twenty minutes northwest of Minneapolis. The adventuresome projects include, but are not limited to, an underwater observatory, custom carved ice-fishing holes, drive-in movies, a performance called "Zombies on Ice", a shanty just for singing karaoke and the Rendezvous Café, which will bridge the fishing community and art community, offering an inviting place for both groups to interact, trade fish for art, get hot drinks and munch on fish shaped cookies.
