Limnology: the scientific study of bodies of fresh water, as lakes and ponds, with reference to their physical, geographical, biological, and other features.
For the 3 year in a row the University of Minnesota Limnology department has set up a Shanty to educate us on a new level about the lake.
limnology 1
A couple of weekends Ago they took core samples of the lake bed and brought them up to the ice surface for us to look at. The cores were said to be possibly 100 years of the sediment of the lake. Though with out actual lake level reading from the past 100 years it is not exactly right.

These images you will find on the walls of the Shanty. They Illustrate what you will see when you look through the microscope into the slides of the water from the lake.
limnology 4
There is much live teaming under the ice. Regardless of the tempurature.
